Alessandro Mendini Biography

Alessandro Mendini, architect was born in Milan in 1931. He directed the magazines "Casabella", "Modo" and "Domus". Monographs have been published in various languages ​​on his work and on that carried out with the Alchimia studio. He creates objects, furniture, environments, paintings, installations, architecture. He collaborates with international companies such as Alessi, Bisazza, Philips, Cartier, Swatch, Hermés, Venini and is a consultant for various industries, including in the Far East, for the formulation of their image and design problems. He is an honorary member of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem and is an honorary professor at the Academic Council of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in China. In 1979 and 1981 he was awarded the Compasso d'Oro for design, he is "Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres" in France, he received the honor of the Architectural League of New York and the Honorary Degree from the Polytechnic of Milan and at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan in France. He was a professor of design at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna. His works can be found in various museums and private collections. In 1989 he opened the Atelier Mendini in Milan together with his brother, architect Francesco, designing the Alessi factories in Omegna, the new Olympic swimming pool in Trieste, some underground stations and the restoration of the Villa Comunale in Naples; the Byblos Art Hotel-Villa Amistà in Verona, the new Trend Group offices in Vicenza, Italy; a tower in Hiroshima, Japan; the Groningen Museum in Holland; a neighborhood in Lugano in Switzerland; the Madsack office building in Hanover and a commercial building in Lörrach, Germany; the Ceramics Museum in Icheon, the new headquarters of the Milan Triennale and the Exhibition Complex in Incheon in Korea, other buildings in Europe and the USA
