Having completed his studies in architecture in Parma, he settled in Milan in 1925 where, after a purist figurative debut, he turned to abstract research of which he was among the main exponents in Italy. In contact with the artistic environment that gathered around the Galleria il Milione, in the early 1930s he began to develop works of rigorous geometric abstraction, investigating the expressive potential of form and colour. After 1939 he returned repeatedly to figuration and resumed painting after the war, consistently following rigorously abstract research. He taught at the Brera Academy (1946-48) and was, in 1948, among the promoters of the Movement for Concrete Art.
