Born in Bergamo in 1894, he approached painting at a very young age under the guidance of his father at the Brera Academy. After the war, he began his career as a portraitist in 1919. In the early 1920s, he undertook numerous journeys. In those years he became friends with Ezra Pound and Hemingway. He met Masson, Mirò, Kokoschka, Dix, Chagall, Klee. In 1930 he began a fervent exhibition activity in Milan, followed by his brother Ermanno, a gallery owner.
