Antonio Amorosi Biography

Born in Ascoli Piceno in 1660. Knowledge of his work was initially confused with that of Eberhard Keil, a seventeenth-century Nordic painter, but thanks to Longhi's studies the artist was definitively identified.
A pupil of Giuseppe Ghezzi in Rome, his first recognized work is the portrait of Filippo Ricci in the Weitzner collection in New York, which shows clear influences of the master Ghezzi. Of his "historical" painting production, the frescoes in the town hall of Civitavecchia have been lost and other works cited by Pascoli are not known with certainty. Some paintings remain as evidence such as S. Gregorio and the souls in purgatory in the church of S. Maria della Morte in Civitavecchia, the Madonna with San Francesco di Paola in the church of S. Rocco in Rome, and the canvas with the Glory of San Bernardino in the Church of S. Bernardino ai Monti in Rome.
Amorosi is best known for his paintings of "bambocciate", small-format paintings of simple folk subjects, influenced by the Arcadian style. These paintings were highly regarded in his time and can be found in museums and private collections throughout Europe. Among the best known works we can mention the "Farmer" with the nest and the "Farmer with the chick" in the Devonshire collection in London, the "Boy with the bunch of grapes" in the Schleissheim Gallery, the "Little flutist" in the Nancy Museum .
