Andrea Michieli Detto Il Vicentino Biography
ANDREA MICHIELI KNOWN THE VICENTINO (Vicenza 1542 - Venice, 1618) Painter of the late Renaissance and mannerist period. His career took place mainly in Venice, where he established himself as one of the most prolific artists of the generation trained on the teachings of Tintoretto and Paolo Caliari, so much so that he earned a place among the painters of the so-called "Seven Ways" developed by Boschini. Michieli demonstrates a strong aptitude in composing complex narrative scenes, often with a war theme, in which he coordinates with wisdom and scenographic breadth the deeds of the individual protagonists and the movements of the masses that surround them. One of the main themes of Michieli's religious painting is the investiture of power granted to representatives of established authority. Michieli's production is also characterized by the large number of altarpieces, many of which are signed, which cover a vast geographical extension, from the lagoon to the Venetian mainland up to the territories of Bergamo, Friuli, Trentino and even along the Dalmatian coast. In them the artist sticks to simplified compositional schemes, based on the immediacy of vision, the monumentality of the figures, the combination of bright colors and the ability to apply the already developed narrative attitude to a sacred subject.
