Ludolf Bakhuizen (also Backhuizen, Bachhuysen or Backhuysen) (Emden, 1631 – Amsterdam, 1708) was a Dutch painter. Trained under Allart van Everdingen and Hendrick Jacobsz Dubbels, he owes more to Willem van de Velde the Younger. Extremely appreciated in his time and exaggeratedly esteemed in the following century, he was a fruitful painter, exact in his descriptions of ships, but somewhat monotonous. His production is divided between topographically precise harbor views, great events in the maritime history of the Netherlands and dramatic storms, works that suited his stylistically limited but pleasantly anecdotal talent. Among his disciples we remember Wigerus Vitringa.
