Manlio Bacosi was born in Perugia in 1921. He trained in the studio of the sculptor Leo Ravazzi; frequenting Gerardo Dottori's studio was also important. He began exhibiting in 1947 and since then has held numerous solo exhibitions in Italy and abroad. He is considered one of the best-known Italian landscape artists. His works in the fields of painting, graphics, sculpture and ceramic decoration testify to a great creative vitality and absolute originality of expression. The composed and balanced alchemy of shapes and colors is striking in his paintings; his landscapes evoke the sweetness of the light of his land: green Umbria. Still lifes are among Bacosi's favorite themes, as are landscapes, grabbed on the fly and resolved into light, airy volumes, where color is played in a skilful register of hues. He is invited to the most important national exhibitions. Numerous monographs have been published on his work. He died in Perugia in 1998.
