Wilhelm Johann Bader (Darmstadt 1855 - 1920) was a German painter, engraver and lithographer, as well as an art teacher.
Bader created idealized and realistic portraits, as well as landscape depictions with human figures such as oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings. In particular, the influences of Arnold Böcklin and Anselm Feuerbach are visible in his early works.

Wilhelm J. Bader Biography

Wilhelm Johann Bader (Darmstadt 1855 - 1920) was a German painter, engraver and lithographer, as well as an art teacher.
Bader created idealized and realistic portraits, as well as landscape depictions with human figures such as oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings. In particular, the influences of Arnold Böcklin and Anselm Feuerbach are visible in his early works.
From 1873 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin and from 1875 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Ludwig von Löfftz, Wilhelm von Diez, Otto Seitz and Andreas Müller. In 1897 he moved to Darmstadt and took over the direction of the local painting school. Bader was a founding member of the Darmstadt Free Artists' Association of which he became president in 1899. On 11 October 1898 he was awarded the Knight's Cross 2nd class of the Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous. In 1910 Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig awarded him the title of professor.
