Pietro Baratta Biography

Pietro Baratta (Carrara 1668 - 1729) was an excellent Italian sculptor of the Baroque period, active above all in the dominions of the then Republic of the Serenissima, from the second half of the 17th century until the early 18th century.

Between 1705 and 1708 he created a statue of Wisdom (and probably that of Wealth which is not signed), as well as reliefs with Charity and Humility for the great monument to the Valier doge family in the church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, designed by Andrea Tirali. His bas-reliefs and sculptural works are present in many Venetian churches, as well as many commissions abroad: cycles of statues and allegorical sculptures adorn the Pavlovsk gardens in Petersburg and the royal gardens in Dresden.
Around 1727 Baratta left Venice to return to Carrara, where he probably sculpted the elegant altar for the Sarzana cathedral.
