Jacques Barraband (1767 - 1809) was a French painter and illustrator, who dedicated himself to drawing and painting animals and flowers, particularly exotic species.
Little is known about his life, except that he was born around 1767, the son of a weaver who worked at the Aubusson Factory. He was the disciple of Joseph Malaine (1745-1809), renowned flower painter under King Louis XVI, and is known to have worked for the Gobelins Factory and later for the famous Sèvres Porcelain Factory.
He executed decorative cycles based on designs by Percier and Fontaine, especially for the dining room commissioned by Emperor Napoleon for the Castle of Saint-Cloud.
His most important works are the more than 300 watercolor and gouache drawings he made to illustrate the monumental works of François Levaillant's Natural History volume, “l'Histoire naturelle des Perroquets”, “l'Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux de Paradis ” and “l’Histoire Naturelle des Promérops,” thanks to which he achieved a rarely equaled level of scientific precision, achieving international fame.
