Andrea Belvedere Biography

Andrea Belvedere (1652 - 1732) eclectic artist with an extraordinary talent which he expressed both in the artistic and literary fields. His ancient genre paintings became particularly famous in the Neapolitan environment.
Since childhood he was passionate about the Neapolitan baroque pictorial style, commonly called "genre painting", and then moved on to European rococo.
In his paintings we find many still lifes, mainly floral, whose style seems to move between Caravaggio, the decorative style of genre painting and the exuberance of the baroque current. On the one hand the shadows, the direct light on the flower vase and on the other the opulence of the chromaticism and the meticulousness of the creation. One of the characteristics of Belvedere's canvases lies in the small size of the painting and the ever-present dark background.
Belvedere's artistic training began under the guidance of Paolo Porpora, although the young artist drew more inspiration from the paintings of Recco and Ruoppolo.
From 1674 to 1700, Belvedere enjoyed a period of great fortune and moved to Spain, to the court of Charles II. Upon the king's death, the painter then returned to Naples, where he decided to put aside painting to dedicate himself to theatre.
Belvedere Andrea died in Naples in 1732.
