Bengt Ruda, born 1918, was a renowned Swedish architect and furniture designer. He worked at the Nordiska Kompaniet company in the early 1950s and gained notoriety for his revolutionary modern furniture designs. In 1956, he was contacted by Ingvar Kamprad, founder of IKEA, who agreed to join the nascent company. Ruda was the first qualified designer to join the Swedish company. His armchair, called "Cavelli", was created in 1959 and was listed in IKEA catalogs that year as a "modern aristocrat". Today, these early IKEA designs are considered prized collector's items. Bengt Ruda remained famous for his varied production of chairs for the Dutch manufacturing companies Nordiska Kompaniet and Artifort. Ruda passed away in 1999.
