Gianluigi Bennati (1929 - 2013) was a sculptor. Born in Milan in 1927, he trained at the Istituto Artigianelli in Milan where he learned the art of wood sculpting. In 1961 he won his first public sculpture competition with the War Memorial of Solbiate Arno. In 1971 he was awarded the title of Knight of the Republic. In 1974 he created the portals of the church of Gazzada. In 1976 he completed the wooden portrait of the famous doctor Christian Bernard, already a collector of Bennati's works. The Monument to the Fallen at Work in Legnano dates back to 1984, and the bronze monument dedicated to the Resistance located in Varese in Largo Resistenze from the following year. He created the altar for the church of the Friars of Bizzozero in Varese, the ceramic baptistery for the parish of Bobbiate, the bronze Madonna located in the rectory of the Basilica of San Vittore in Varese and the large bronze high relief depicting Pope Paul VI for the oratory of San Vittore. His works are kept at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Varese, the Gallery of Modern Art of Gallarate, the Pagani Foundation of Castellanza, the Museum of Modern Art of Udine, at the Museum of Modern Art of Brindisi and in other public institutions.
