Bidjar is an important city in Kurdistan. Bidjar carpet production is famous for their robustness and durability. These rugs are thick and heavy made, perfect for high traffic areas. The robustness is due to the dense weave, forcefully incorporated into the carpet with the help of special tools such as metal nails or a heavy iron comb. The ornamental schemes are different: concentric rhombuses with various background colours, rhomboidal medallions, traditional schemes with medallion and cantonal ones on a Herati background. Another popular decoration is the all-over Boteh pattern, or the Mina khani design, which some scholars claim originated in Kurdistan. The colors of Bidjar carpets are often strongly contrasting and include dark shades of red or blue. The border is generally decorated with a stylized version of the Herat motif.
