Filippo Bigioli, painter born on 4 June 1798 in San Severino Marche and died on 18 January 1878 in Rome, learned his first drawing lessons from his father Venanzio. In 1819 he moved to Rome, where he attended courses at the Accademia di San Luca. He won first prize for third class painting with a copy of Laocoon thanks to his exceptional drawing skills.
Bigioli's earliest known work is an 1830 painting of Herodias for Count Annibale Portoguelfo. From that date Bigioli received numerous commissions, such as sixteen mythological paintings of the alcove for Palazzo Torlonia.
In 1842 Bigioli was appointed superintendent of the Galleria dell'Accademia dei Virtuosi.
Filippo Bigioli died on 18 January 1878 in Rome.
