Francesco Bonfanti Biography

Francesco Bonfanti (Noto, 18 July 1898 – Bassano del Grappa, 1959) was an Italian engineer and architect. As a technician of the Liberated Lands he was sent to Bassano del Grappa, where in 1922 he decided to settle and begin his professional activity. In these years he met the Paduan engineer Gino Zardini with whom he collaborated until 1938. Through Zardini, Bonfanti met Gaetano Marzotto who entrusted him with the study of the project of the "Social City" of Valdagno. A project which he carried out between 1928 and 1944. Towards the end of the 1930s he established a relationship of friendship and cultural exchange with Giorgio Wenter Marini. After having participated in the IV Triennale of Monza with the project "Villa in città" he met Giò Ponti with whom he collaborated from 1936 to 1942 on a series of projects: "The villa and the park La Favorita" in Valdagno, "The office building " in Piazza San Babila in Milan and "The cableway and hotel plan" of the Dolomites. In 1940 he graduated in Architecture at the University of Venice and throughout his professional activity he experienced "the tension between the technical, engineering and artistic roles of the architectural profession". In 1944 he began studying the plan for the reconstruction of Francavilla al Mare, destroyed during the war, with the engineer Filippo Masci. He then continued his activity in Bassano del Grappa, Castelfranco, Padua, Venice, Milan and Abruzzo. He died in 1959 in Bassano del Grappa.
