Pietro Bouvier Biography

Pietro Bouvier was born in Milan on 16 November 1839, son of Benedetto, a Genevan craftsman specialized in gilding and carving. Raised in his father's workshop, he attended courses at the Brera Academy, in particular those of R. Casnedi.
He exhibited only in Milan, in particular at the Brera Expositions from 1963 to 1910, where he had numerous admirers and enthusiasts who contested his works.
His first painting depicted Garibaldi helping the dying Anita and is today preserved in the Galleria civica d'arte moderni in Milan. The painting is characterized by strong historical and pictorial strength, with a desolate landscape and sharp sunset light.
He also made several other paintings between 1860 and 1890, including portraits and genre works such as “La Provvidenza” and “El visorin de l’Andrea”. Towards the end of his career he devoted himself mainly to landscapes.
His works can be found in many collections of nineteenth-century Lombardy, including the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, the Congregation of Charity of Lodi and the Promotrice of Naples. Pietro Bouvier died in Milan on 18 November 1927.
