Michel Boyer Biography

Michel Boyer, born in Paris in 1935, was a French interior designer and interior designer. In 1957 he enrolled at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, where he studied at the studio of the famous decorator André Arbus. In 1960 Boyer joined architect Pierre Dufau's team, which specialized in the design of office and bank buildings. In 1965, Boyer was given responsibility for the reconstruction of the Rothschild Bank on Rue Lafitte in Paris. In 1972 he designed the interiors of the Hotel PLM St. Jacques and the French embassies in Brasilia and Washington, as well as numerous corporate headquarters such as Paribas, Total, Elf and Vivendi. Michel Boyer designed furniture using materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, laminate upright, fiberglass or lacquer. He preferred structured and solid shapes that often played with solids and voids. Some of these pieces have become icons of 1970s French style, such as the PLM chauffeuses, an armchair composed of metal tubing and leather roller cushions, and of course his famous steel stools. Boyer also created lamps of remarkable simplicity and objects of various kinds. Michel Boyer died in Paris in 2011.
