Alexandre Cabanel, born in Montpellier on 28 September 1823, was a French painter famous for his female nudes and historical paintings for Napoleon III and other European rulers. Cabanel studied at the école des Beaux-Arts, where he won his second Prix de Rome in 1845, spending five years at the Villa Medici in Rome.

Alexandre Cabanel, born in Montpellier on 28 September 1823, was a French painter famous for his female nudes and historical paintings for Napoleon III and other European rulers. Cabanel studied at the école des Beaux-Arts, where he won his second Prix de Rome in 1845, spending five years at the Villa Medici in Rome.
Cabanel achieved great fame with the Birth of Venus, present at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Her exhibition at the Salon caused a notable scandal, so much so that Gauguin himself commented: "This Venus is absolutely indecent, obnoxiously lewd." Despite this, the canvas was purchased by Napoleon III in 1863, and Cabanel achieved great notoriety and numerous other commissions, as well as the appointment of professor at the école des Beaux-Arts and member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
Cabanel died in Paris in 1889.
