Giuseppe Cades Biography

Giuseppe Cades was born in Rome in 1750 and demonstrated great artistic talent from a young age. At just fifteen years old, he established himself in the rich circuit of Roman commissions and in 1766 he won the prestigious prize of the Accademia di San Luca.
Although his independent temperament created problems with his teacher Domenico Corvi, Cades linked himself to the circles of Nordic artists passing through Rome, where he felt the first symptoms of the nascent Romanticism. The artist was known for his exceptional drawing talent and his autonomy of expression, as well as for his fantastic creativity.
Some of his most famous works are the frescoes in Villa Borghese, the Orlando Furioso room in Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia.
In the first decade of the 1990s, the painter Cades sent a series of canvases to the convent of the Friars Minor of Fabriano, which already demonstrated his new interest in classicism.
Cades was fascinated by the great masters of the sixteenth century, in particular Raphael, but also by Michelangelo and the many artists of Mannerism. Thanks to his skilled drawing, he managed to produce prints of the highest quality, including the famous "Death of Leonardo da Vinci", commissioned by Catherine II of Russia.
His career was prematurely interrupted by his death in 1799, which prevented him from completing two important works: "the Fall of the Rebel Angels" and "the Martyrdom of the Blessed Signoretto Alliata" for the Cathedral of Pisa.
