Bruno Catalano Biography

Bruno Catalano, born in 1960, is a French sculptor originally from Khouribga, Morocco. Catalano is the third and last child of a family of Sicilian origins. In 1970, the Catalano family left Morocco and moved to France. In 1982, he began working as a sailor at the Société Nationale Maritime Corse Méditerranée. At the age of thirty, Catalano first discovered the craft of leather masks with his friends, and then devoted himself to clay in 1991. Determined to master this art, he enrolled in a modeling and drawing workshop and completed his self-taught training. Subsequently, he moved to his studio, where sculpture became his main occupation. Catalano begins to receive public commissions, becoming the focus of his work. His artistic practice takes a new turn in 2004, when, during the making of a statue, a small metal casting accident causes a gash in the body of the sculpture. From that moment on, Catalano decides to exploit this incident and make it a central element in his subsequent production. Starting from his first miniature figures, he began to create increasingly monumental figures. The "Travelers" series, as they are called, requires each of the models to have baggage.
