Salvatore Cherubini Biography
Salvatore Cherubini was born in Florence on 14 September 1760. He studied music under the guidance of his father, who, in 1769, directed him to the school of Bartolomeo and Alessandro Felici, for the teaching of counterpoint. In 1774 he produced a Mass in C and a Dixit (both for 4 voices and orchestra), achieving great success. This allowed Felici to present his student's score to Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine, who showed interest in the young musician. Cherubini traveled extensively, especially between London and Paris, achieving great success and earning many commissions in various theaters.
Cherubini's success can probably be attributed to an austere and uncompromising lifestyle, which guaranteed him a certain academic rigor and professional pedantry. He gained great admiration from the greatest musicians of the nineteenth century, from Beethoven to Schumann, from Wagner to Brahms, together with important contemporary artists and writers.
On March 15, 1842, Cherubini died in his home in the faubourg Poissonnière.
