“Company of the East Indies” is a name born in France and then in common use since the 16th century. It indicates Chinese porcelain produced for export to Europe. It was Portuguese traders who first began to import the blue and white porcelain of the Ming Dynasty. Trade later expanded with the Dutch East India Company and intensified until it stopped when the Ming dynasty fell in 1644 and civil war interrupted production. European traders thereafter turned to Japanese manufactured goods.
The production of Chinese ceramics in the East India Company style mainly includes vases, plates, tea sets, jugs and other useful ceramics along with figurines, animals and birds, all richly decorated.
