Lovis Corinth Biography

Lovis Corinth was born in Tapiau in East Prussia in 1858. He was an important painter and representative of German Impressionism. He studied at the Königsberg Art Academy under the guidance of Professor Otto Günther and then at the famous Munich Academy.
He subsequently moved to Paris, one of the capitals of the European avant-garde of the period, where he got to know the impressionist movement and above all the realistic works of Wilhelm Leibl, which influenced his first paintings.
In 1881 he returned to Munich and a few years later he moved to Berlin where he met Max Liebermann. During this period, his style was influenced by 17th century Flemish painting, characterized by a strong naturalism. He mainly painted nude scenes, religious rites and subjects belonging to literature and mythology.
In these years he also experimented with new painting techniques, in particular lithography.
In the last fifteen years of his life, Corinth created numerous paintings and self-portraits. In 1917, he was appointed professor by the Berlin Academy.
In 1925, he traveled to Amsterdam with an old student of his to admire the works of his favorite Dutch masters, Rembrandt and Frans Hals. During this trip, however, he became seriously ill and died of pneumonia in Zandvoort on 17 July.
