Lucas Cranach Biography

Lucas Cranach, known as the Elder, was born in Kronach in 1472 and died on 16 October 1553 in Weimar. Renaissance painter and printmaker, Cranach was one of the main exponents of the Danubian school and the Lutheran Reformation in art, as well as the father of Lucas Cranach the Younger.
His style is characterized by a graphic and elegant line, characterized by almost stylized shapes that take up the Gothic tradition and reinterpret it in an innovative way. Cranach ranged from painting to engraving, creating both sacred and mythological works, from nudes to moral allegories, from hunting scenes to Lutheran propaganda. In 1505 he was appointed court painter at the Saxon court, where he created numerous allegorical paintings. Throughout his career, Cranach renewed the typology of the official portrait, as demonstrated by his famous full-length portraits of the Dukes of Saxony and Martin Luther from 1529.
Lucas Cranach the elder died on 16 October 1553 in Weimar.
