Guido Crepax Biography

Guido Crepax was born in Milan in 1933.
Well-known Italian cartoonist and illustrator
After starting to work as an advertising graphic designer, he published the stories of Neutron and Valentina on Linus. The latter soon became the main character of the series, characterized by her restless and unscrupulous personality. His use of close-ups revolutionized the traditional structure of comics.
Crepax has created other successful works, such as “The Pirate Spaceship” (1968), “Histoire d'O” (1976), “Emmanuelle” (1978), “Justine” (1979), “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” (1987), “Obsessions” (1990), and “Frankenstein” (2002).
After his death, in September 2003 the Triennale Bovisa in Milan organized a multimedia exhibition dedicated to Guido Crepax and his work, entitled “Guido Crepax. Valentina, the shape of time”. The exhibition analyzed the designer's artistic career, in reference to the profound changes that affected Italian society over the forty years of his activity. In particular, the exhibition reconstructed the "voluptuous logic of narration" of Valentina's stories, which represents an archetype of femininity that broke clichés and subverted the conventional model of gender relations of her time.
