Pirro Cuniberti Biography

Pier Achille Cuniberti, known as Pirro (Sala Bolognese, 10 September 1923 – Bologna, 4 March 2016), was an Italian painter and designer. Born in Padulle, the capital of Sala Bolognese, he was a pupil of Giorgio Morandi and Giovanni Romagnoli at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, he graduated in 1948 and in the same year he discovered the work of Paul Klee at the Venice Biennale, which has since then been a reference for his conception of form as an infinite creative genesis. The constant practice of drawing is the common thread of the works on paper in which Cuniberti offers the reader a variety of ways and expressive solutions that cross the surface of the sheet developing subtle vibrations, traces and tensions fixed in the moment of their appearance. These are graphic elements and chromatic moods that dialogue with each other like imaginary alphabets, hypothetical forms suspended on the ridge of the imagination, maps of memory, stories of unexpected signs that the artist invents without a logical order. One of the most original artists in the As part of a "fantastic line" of Italian art of the second half of the 20th century, Cuniberti tackles the themes of landscape, still life and figure with the same intensity, inventing clear lines and geometric measurements, silent luminosities and light shadows of the colour, restless signs and harmonious balances of the composition. Over the last ten years, Cuniberti's work has still reserved many surprises, above all because he has been able to deal with the archive of images from the past, letting the moods of previous seasons emerge within new apparitions, without ever losing contact with the allusive strength of his unmistakable style. Among other exhibitions he exhibits at the IX, X, XI Quadrennial of Rome. Two of his works are located in the museum of Sella di Lodrignano, 4 of his works, two of which received one as a purchase prize of the III° Contemporary Art Exhibition organized in Bologna by the Federation of Artists, Painters and Sculptors in 1957 and another as a purchase prize on the occasion of the Autumn Exhibition in Bologna in 1960 at the Museum of Modern Art of Bologna, other works are present at the Galleria Civica of Modena, Some works are found in the Civic Museum of Capuccine in Bagnacavallo, several works are found in the Art Museum of Ravenna, a work in the collection of the Emilia Romagna Region, a work in the art collection of the municipality of Sassuolo, a work in the municipal collection of contemporary art of Sant'ilario d'Enza.
