Raffaele De Grada Biography

Raffaele De Grada (Milan, 1885 – 1957). Born in Milan in March 1885 to Antonio (painter) and Teresa Amelotti. His family settled in Argentina in 1890, returning to Lombardy after two years, and then to Switzerland in 1899. At a very young age he helped his father in his decoration work; then, in the years from 1902 to 1908, he attended the Academies of Dresden and Karlsruhe. In 1913 he made his debut with a solo exhibition in Zurich. His first Italian solo exhibition dates back to 1921 in Florence in Palazzo Antinori, attracting the attention of critics and the Florentine artistic environment. In 1922 he moved to Giramenti, near Arcetri. In the same year he was invited to the Venice Biennale in which he participated in almost all subsequent editions. In 1926 in Milan he participated in the first exhibition of the Italian twentieth century. In 1928 he had his own solo show at the Venice Biennale. In 1929 he took part in the second exhibition of the Novecento Italiano at the Permanente in Milan. In 1930 he moved to Milan. He continues to dedicate himself to the landscape: that of the Milanese suburbs, of Brianza and that of Tuscany, comparing himself with the paintings of Corot and Cezanne. He died in Milan in 1957.
