Henry De Groux, born in Brussels on 15 September 1866 and died in 1930, was a well-known Belgian sculptor and painter. He is especially famous for his symbolist works produced at the end of the nineteenth century. De Groux studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. Throughout his life, he had to deal with psychological problems and his family's economic difficulties. His most important work was “Christ Mocked,” in which De Groux identified with the figure of Christ, both suffering and misunderstood. The painter soon abandoned impressionist techniques to dedicate himself to painting portraits of people, such as Émile Zola, Napoleon and Charles Baudelaire. He also found inspiration in great poets such as Virgil, Dante and the composer Wagner. De Groux created heroic and apocalyptic paintings, depicting scenes of battles and piles of corpses. After the First World War, he produced over three hundred drawings depicting the horrors of war. Henry De Groux died in Marseille on 12 January 1930.
