Philip James De Loutherbourg Biography
Philippe-Jacques de Loutherbourg, also known as Philip James and Philipp Jakob, known as the Younger, was born on 31 October 1740 in Strasbourg and died on 11 March 1812 in Chiswick. He was an English artist of French-Swiss origins, French painter, set designer and illustrator, who worked mainly in England. His works are characterized by scenes of battles, hunting and horse riding. In the 1760s, he had great success at the Salon with his landscapes. In 1771 he moved to London, where he created theatrical sets and invented a mechanical theater called the "Eidophusikon".
In 1789, Loutherbourg temporarily abandoned painting to pursue an interest in alchemy and the supernatural. He met Alessandro Cagliostro, who taught him occultism.
Loutherbourg died in Chiswick, west London, in 1812.
