Henri Decaisne was born in Brussels on 27 January 1799 and began studying painting at the age of fifteen. On the advice of the neoclassical painter and historian Jacques Louis David, Decaisne visited Paris. During his stay in the city, he worked in the studio of the Romantic painter Girodet, whose art was the main influence for him. He also gained a great reputation as an excellent portraitist. Many of his paintings are found in Versailles, including "The Entry of Charles VII into Rouen" and "The Establishment of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem". In 1842, he received the Legion of Honor. Henri Decaisne died on 17 October 1852 in Paris.
