Deruta Biography

The richest period for Deruta was undoubtedly the sixteenth century, when its artisans participated, albeit reflexively, in the climate of artistic and cultural revolution of the Renaissance. A true "Deruta style" is taking shape based on the adoption of decorative motifs typical of the Umbrian Renaissance pictorial tradition, in particular of Perugino, Pinturicchio and Raphael who placed themselves at the center of an intense artistic and commercial movement also borrowed from the intense relations with the Perugian community. In the 17th century, Deruta majolica underwent a profound change in taste and in the social destination of the works. Production seems to be evolving towards normal routine products. The shapes become more moving, with pods and highly imaginative plastic applications: shell-shaped or trunk-shaped salt shakers, “drink if you can” cups, leaf-shaped whistles, inkwells. However, it was during the seventeenth century that characteristic decorative typologies of sixteenth-century origin were defined, such as the "grotesques" and the "arabesques", motifs still used today and highly distinctive of Deruta majolica.
