Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich was born in Weimar on 30 October 1712. He had an artistic education in the workshop of his father, who was himself a painter. Later, he continued his studies with Johann Alexander Thiele, one of the best-known German landscape painters of the time. He traveled extensively in Germany and the Netherlands and got to know the works of Rembrandt and his school.
In 1733 he was appointed court painter to the Elector of Saxony and the King of Poland, allowing him to travel to Italy and visit the cities of Rome and Venice. During his stay he was able to admire the works of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Sebastiano Ricci, Annibale Carracci and Titian, who influenced his style.
He was both an engraver and a painter and his talent was demonstrated in the variety of his works, which depending on the case could be light, impact or meticulous.
Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich died on 23 April 1774 in Dresden.
