Terje Ekstrøm was born in 1944 in Fodt. He is known as the pioneer of postmodern design in Norway and his futuristic chairs have gained prestige, even appearing in the Star Trek television series. His presence brought a thriving energy and new independence to the Norwegian design scene in the 1970s and 1980s, in a time of socio-cultural change. Ekstrøm represented a new generation of designers who challenged the ideals of the golden age of Scandinavian design. He was both a product of his time and a mind projected ahead of it. His internationally successful Ekstrem chair has become a design icon due to its unique and innovative features, as have his audio equipment designs for the renowned Tandberg Radiofabrikk.
