Franz Ficara was born in Reggio Calabria in 1926, where he spent the first part of his life. He dedicated himself to exhibiting several solo and group exhibitions in the south, until he moved to Milan in the late 1950s. Here, he began to frequent the cultural environment of Brera. In 1970, Ficara and three other artists - Maggi, Mazzucchetti and Boncinelli - founded the "group of four" and exhibited together in several exhibitions. In the same years, Ficara's pictorial language, which has always been very personal and disconnected from all current influences, reached its full maturity. Figures, landscapes and still lifes were an important element of his painting in reference to the South. In his objects and in the faces of people, Ficara has represented and told the sacrifice and dignity of all those people who for years have lived in economic hardship linked to a condition of secondary status. Ficara was a man of the south, and the south was the protagonist of his painting.
