Joseph Eduard Flüggen, born in Munich in 1842, son of Gisbert Flüggen of Munich, Joseph studied initially under his father and then at the Munich Academy. In 1856 he enrolled at the Munich Academy and from 1859 became a pupil of Karl Theodor von Piloty, under whose influence he began to paint historical paintings. Read the full biography

Joseph Eduard Flüggen, born in Munich in 1842, son of Gisbert Flüggen of Munich, Joseph studied initially under his father and then at the Munich Academy. In 1856 he enrolled at the Munich Academy and from 1859 became a pupil of Karl Theodor von Piloty, under whose influence he began to paint historical paintings. In 1866 he concluded his studies and traveled to Paris, London, Brussels and Antwerp. It was in Antwerp that he painted under the direction of Hendrik Leys.
In the late 1870s a series of works on the theme of Wagnerian opera began to emerge, which brought him the attention of Ludwig II of Bavaria, who appointed him court painter of the theater.
Flüggen died in 1906.
