Francesco Fracanzano (Monopoli 1612-1656) was an artist esteemed and appreciated for his very rich variety of languages, stylistic solutions, sudden switching on of lights, harmonious fusions of colour. In 1622 ca. he moved to Naples, and in 1630 ca. he and his brother frequented the workshop of the mannerist Jusepe de Ribera. In 1632 he married Giovanna, sister of Salvator Rosa, a painter much appreciated in the Neapolitan city. The Neapolitan artistic environment exalted him and urged him to emulate the most esteemed masters of the moment. He worked extensively in Naples and Puglia in churches and stately palaces, many of his works have been lost and others are difficult to attribute. Worth mentioning in particular is the canvas of Saint Peter preserved in the National Museum of Capodimonte, certainly attributed to Fracanzano.
