Pietro Fragiacomo Biography

He was born in Piran, Istria, the main Italian city near Trieste, but lived most of his life in Venice. He studied for a year (1877) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. He was a close companion, often collaborating with the painter Giacomo Favreto.
He abandoned his studies almost immediately to continue working with Giacomo Favretto. In 1879 he frequented Ettore Tito, with whom he created some paintings depicting Saint Peter in the castle. In 1880 he participated in the National Exhibition of Turin and exhibited the painting "A boring accident". In the following years Pietro Fragiacomo participated in the largest national exhibitions:
Milan in 1882
Rome in 1883
Turin in 1884 (bringing "Poor Venice")
In 1887 he participated in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts:
In 1887 he achieved great success at the Venice Exhibition, in 1891 he exhibited paintings by Fishermen, Silence, Sera, Laguna, Casa dei Pescatori, etc. in Milan. In 1889 he won a bronze medal at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition and participated in the Munich International Exhibition of the same year and later. In 1895 his painting "Sorrow" won a prize in Venice and the following year in Berlin.
Unlike Giacomo Favretto and Ettore Tito, Pietro Fragiacomo is not interested in Venetian folk traditions, but he certainly enjoys painting landscapes, lagoons and showing off his excellent skills of light and shadow effects.
In fact, in his work we find many Venetian landscapes taken from the banks of the Giudeca Canal, where he has his studio, very similar to the works created by Guglielmo Ciardi. He was influenced by the paintings of Filippo Carcano's work.
In his bright seascapes and cityscapes, Macchiaioli's influence is tempered by lighter touches and a darker palette, based on grays and steel blues that evoke the great Venetian painters, particularly Guardi. In his later work, Pietro Fragiacomo's crepuscular tones are lightened by the use of symbolism bordered by floral notes.
He won a bronze medal at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition and participated in the Munich International Exhibition in the same year.
Pietro Fragiacomo mainly draws views of the sea and the city of Venice, usually at night, a theme pursued by Mario de Maria. By the turn of the century, his style had acquired symbolism, with no room for reality. He received the Principe Umberto Prize at the Milan Triennale in 1891, and participated regularly in the Venice Biennale from 1895 to 1922, with a solo exhibition in 1910 and a posthumous prize in the 1924 Retrospective. He died in Venice.
