Luca Francesconi Biography
Luca Francesconi is a contemporary artist born in Mantua, Italy, in 1979. He currently lives and works between Mantua and Paris. Francesconi has exhibited his works in numerous public and private spaces, including the Ratti Foundation (2000), the Tirana Biennale (2001), Fuori Uso (2004), the Galleria Civica of Trento (2004), the Galleria Cristina Guerra of Lisbon (2006), Maison Populaire a Montreuil (2007), Palais de Tokyo (2009), Galleria Umberto di Marino (2006, 2009), Fondazione Sandretto, Crac Alsace, Magasin – Grenoble, Fluxia (2010), Mot – Bruxelles, Chez Valentin – Paris (2011), the Musées de Montbéliard, Arte Nova-Art Basel Miami (2012), MAN – Nuoro, and the Marino Marini Museum (2013).
Francesconi co-directed Brown project space in Milan with Luigi Presicce and Valentina Suma from 2008 to 2010. In 2009 he won the Illy Present/Future award with the Umberto Di Marino gallery, with a jury composed of Alexis Vaillant, Hans-Ulrich Obrist , and Jens Hoffman, during Artissima in Turin. In 2011 he was invited by Bice Curiger to exhibit his work at Illumination, the 54th Venice Biennale. Giovanni Carmine, director of the Kunsthalle St. Gallen, and Alexis Vaillant, chief curator of Capc-Bordeaux, invited Francesconi to TheNnow – Miart 2013, where he collaborated with Jimmie Durham on a project.
In recent years Francesconi has exhibited his works in various spaces, including Maxxi, Kunsthalle Lissabon, MAN – Nuoro, GNAM – Rome, Maga – Gallarate, Oslo 10 – Basel, TONUS – Paris, Eli and Edythe Museum Michigan State University and numerous other institutions. His artistic research is guided by his interest in anthropological themes, such as traditions and popular culture, as well as reflections that encompass the food production system, food distribution and the human implications of these processes. Francesconi also collaborates with the food and wine magazine Il Gambero Rosso.
