Gortzius Geldorp (1553-1618) was a Flemish Renaissance artist active in Germany where he stood out for his portraits. Born in Leuven, Geldorp learned to paint from Frans Francken I, later from Frans Pourbus the Elder, both pupils of Frans Floris, Antwerp's leading Renaissance painter.
Geldorp became the court painter of the Duke of Terra Nova, Charles of Aragon Tagliavia, accompanying him on his travels, including Cologne where Geldorp settled and also became a city councilor in 1610.
The painter mainly specialized in individual and group portraits, working for the aristocracy and other important patrons.
