Abbas Gharib Biography
1Abbas Gharib, born on 16 June 1942, is an architect of Iranian origin living in Italy. His approach to planning and design, which goes beyond traditional modernism or contemporary format, has made him known as an influential figure in the research, practice and teaching of post-contemporary art and architecture. Gharib was born in Tehran and grew up in a secular Iranian family. He completed his primary education in Tehran and then studied architecture at the IUAV University of Venice, where he graduated in the field of urban planning in 1969. He worked as an architect in Venice until 1973, when he opened his own studio in Verona, Italy. Over the years, Gharib has distanced himself from the design methods of the Modern Movement, considering them abstract and self-referential, instead orienting himself towards the post-contemporary movement and Complexity Theory. His studio focuses on the interactive relationships between space and the surrounding context, using complex solutions based on a renewed attention to the relationship between nature and culture. Gharib is also involved in diverse cultural fields such as cinema, music, visual arts and photography, working both as an architect and as a juror in film festivals.
