Diego Giacometti Biography

He was born in Borgonovo in 1902, thirteen months after the birth of his brother Alberto. Even as a child, Diego acted as a model for his brother's sculptures, and at the age of twelve he created his first sculpture entitled "Diego's Head". After traveling half the world, Diego joined Alberto in Paris in 1925 and created objects in bronze and plaster for elite furnishings. When Alberto begins studying live portraits, the designer becomes his model and assistant: he prepares the support structures and makes the plaster casts for the castings. But Diego also made his name as a furniture maker, first designing and creating planters, lamps and table vases and then actual furniture. After his brother's death, Diego begins to investigate his expressive skills more and more and his furniture is transformed into real sculpture objects. Following a passion from his childhood he began modeling animals. Now in his eighties he completed one last great undertaking: the furnishings for the Picasso museum in Paris. He died on 15 June 1985. His tomb is located next to that of his parents and brother Alberto in the Borgonovo cemetery, some of his works are exhibited in Stampa in the Ciäsa Granda museum.
