Corrado Giaquinto Biography

Corrado Domenico Nicolò Antonio Giaquinto (Molfetta, 8 February 1703 - Naples, 18 April 1765) was a famous Italian painter.
He undertook an early apprenticeship in the workshop of the minor painter Saverio Porta. His teacher in Naples was the painter Nicola Maria Rossi, a follower of Francesco Solimena.
In March 1721 he moved to Naples, returning to Molfetta in February 1723 and then back to Naples in October 1724.
In Rome he opened his workshop near Ponte Sisto together with his pupil Giuseppe Rossi. Subsequently, he created several successful works including the cycle of frescoes in the church of San Nicola dei Lorenesi and Christ on the cross with the Madonna, Saint John the Evangelist and Mary Magdalene in the cathedral of Mafra, commissioned by the King of Portugal John V.
His pictorial style does not depend on the master Francesco Solimena. Studying the late Luca Giordano, the Giordanesque San Lorenzo Giustiniani suggests the mixture of the fresco with the pastellated effect of the surface. Furthermore, the 1729 fresco in the Roman church of Sant'Isidoro by Charles-André van Loo served as a further opportunity for meditation for the acquisition of his personal pictorial language.
