Gio Ponti & Emilio Lancia Biography

Emilio Lancia (1890 - 1973) Architect and designer born in Milan in 1890, attended architecture courses at the Royal Higher Technical Institute of Milan. Friend of Giò Ponti (1891- 1979), in 1915 he interrupted his studies with him and enrolled at the Military Academy of Turin and left for the front. Upon returning from the war he returned to Milan and graduated in 1919. In 1920 he participated in the 1st National Exhibition of Sacred Art in Venice and the following year he presented two drawings at the 1st Architecture Exhibition promoted by the Artistic Family of Milan. In the second half of the 1920s he began a collaboration with Ponti and with him in 1927 he founded the group "Il Labirinto", together with Chiesa, Buzzi, Marelli and Venini. In 1928 Lancia, together with Giò Ponti, signed an agreement with La Rinascente for the marketing of a series of furniture and furnishing accessories, including some ceramics, bearing the "Domus Nova" brand. For Ponti he designed some ceramic table services produced by the Milanese Ginori San Cristoforo factory. In the same year one of his folding desks in elm briar was presented at the Biennale of Decorative Arts in Monza and in 1930 it was at the IV Triennale of Monza. In 1933 Lancia interrupted his collaboration with Ponti, opened a studio on his own and dedicated himself mainly to 'architecture; Furnishing and designing furniture has since become only an occasional commitment. Having interrupted his activity as an architect during the war years, he retired to private life at the end of the 1950s. He died in Besozzo in 1973.
