Guillaume Grohe' Biography

Guillaume Grohé was born on February 9, 1808 in the Grand Duchy of Hesse Darmstadt. In 1827 he moved to Paris with his brother Jean Michel and began his career as a cabinetmaker. In 1829 they founded a workshop for the production of furniture and art objects, which was very successful and was admired at the Exhibition of French Industry in 1834.
In 1849 Guillaume obtained the Legion of Honor and was promoted to Officer. He was one of the most important cabinetmakers of his time. Among his clients were kings, princes and princesses, as well as Emperor Napoleon III and his wife Eugenie, and from 1862, also the Queen of England.
He created the furnishings of Chantilly for the Duke of Aumale and of the Château de Chenonceaux for Madame Pelouze.
He participated in numerous exhibitions and became a member of the jury of the Universal Exhibition, of which he was vice-president in 1878 and a member of the admission committee.
In 1861 his brother retired from the business, so Guillaume managed the business until 1884, when, old and without heirs, he sold the furnishings and buildings. He retired to Neuilly-sur-Seine, where he died on 6 April 1885.
