Proferio Grossi Biography

Proferio Grossi (Parma 1923-2000) After completing his classical studies, he moved to Milan, where, after briefly attending the prestigious Bocconi economics university, he decided to enroll at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, becoming Atanasio's favorite student Soldiers, from Parma and a key figure of Italian geometric abstraction. In 1948 Proferio Grossi joined the MAC (Concrete Art Movement), an artistic group formed in the Lombard capital on the initiative of Soldati and Munari. The movement brought together abstractionists of different backgrounds and poetics, united however by the rejection of post-cubist and realist tendencies. Grossi's artistic debut was also in Milan: in 1954 he held his first solo show in Studio B 24, while at the Schettini Gallery, three years later (1957), he organized the 1st Concrete Art Exhibition. Although an abstractionist, Grossi also dedicated himself over the years to figurative painting, to the "painting of objects", giving life to splendid still lifes, which coexist in a dialectical manner with anti-naturalistic pictorial production. For artistic merit, he was awarded the nomination of member of the Academy of Fine Arts of Parma as well as that of member of the Arts Sciences Lettres of Paris. In 1986 he was among the artists called to create a work for the celebration of the sixth centenary of the Foundation of the Cathedral of Milan. Numerous personal and anthological exhibitions dedicated to the artist. Among all, remember, the anthology held in Piacenza in 1999, the year before the artist's death.
