Brus Gunther Biography

Günther Brus (Ardning, 27 September 1938) is an Austrian painter, writer and performance artist, an exponent of Viennese Actionism. Günter Brus together with Otto Mühl, Hermann Nitsch, and Rudolf Schwarzkogler was the founder of Viennese Actionism, an artistic movement of Body art which, trying to overcome the traditional boundaries of painting and artistic making, took the body as a place of action, giving life to some of the most violent, symbolic and self-destructive performances of the sixties. With the movement he used self-harm, pain and the cathartic shock of the public as a protest against the cultural repression that Austrian society exercised on the individual's impulses. He was arrested twice for his provocations against public morality and even threatened with death, he took refuge in Berlin until 1970. His works are exhibited in the most authoritative art museums in Europe and America.
