Constantin Guys was born on 3 December 1805 in Holland to a family originally from Grenoble.
Around 1840 he settled in London, where he was one of the founders of the Illustrated London News. During the Crimean War, he was a war correspondent and his sketches were appreciated for their liveliness and promptness.
In 1860 he moved to Paris, inaugurating a new season of drawings that portrayed costumes dedicated to the upper class, the Opéra and the life of the boulevards. Read the full biography

Around 1840 he settled in London, where he was one of the founders of the Illustrated London News. During the Crimean War, he was a war correspondent and his sketches were appreciated for their liveliness and promptness.
In 1860 he moved to Paris, inaugurating a new season of drawings that portrayed costumes dedicated to the upper class, the Opéra and the life of the boulevards. It was around this time that he began to gain some notoriety.
In 1885 following a car accident, he died in hospital. However, posthumous glory came thanks to two retrospectives of his works.
His work consists only of drawings, prodigious in life and arabesques, which reveal the designer's affinity with Gavarni and Goya
