Beppe Guzzi Biography

He was born in Genoa on 23 March 1902 to Rodolfo and Carmela Desiderato. In 1913 the family moved to Livorno, where G. attended the Industrial Technical Institute and in 1916 he made his debut as a painter at the Pro soldier exhibition. In contact with the artists of the Labronico group, he began to make himself known at the 1st and 2nd exhibition of the group held in Livorno in 1920 and 1921, as well as at the group exhibitions set up on the occasion of the CX exhibition of the Society of amateurs and lovers of fine arts in Rome (Mesto returning : location unknown) in 1922 and at the Pesaro gallery in Milan in 1924 (The old lady, Marina and Daily bread: location unknown). From the epigones of Macchiaiola painting, his interests soon turned to the tragic expressionism of L. Viani, with whom he became friends since 1919 and with whom he exhibited at the Bottega d'arte of Livorno in 1924. In the second half of the 1950s the G. developed an increasingly synthetic pictorial language, with large chromatic fields and a "clear compositional architecture" reminiscent of the Tuscan tradition. Member of the jury at the IX Roman Quadrennial (1965), he exhibited five works out of competition. In the following years he collaborated on the illustration of the fourth canto of Hell (La Commediadi Dante Alighieri, Milan 1965), and created the drawings for the illustrated edition of Arminio e Dorotea by JW Goethe (Rome 1968). G. died in Rome on 4 September. 1982.
