Jean Jacques Henner Biography
Jean-Jacques Henner was born in Bernwiller on 5 March 1829 and distinguished himself in the art of portraits and genre scenes. He was discovered by his drawing teacher, Charles Goutzwiller, who noticed his talent. Jean-Jacques was then admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris thanks to a scholarship. In 1858 he attempted to win the Grand Prix de Rome, which allowed him to spend the next five years in the Italian metropolis, during which he met many other artists at Villa Medici. During this time, he had the opportunity to study the greatest masters, including Raphael, Melozzo, Michelangelo, Titian, Correggio and others, while admiring the beautiful Italian landscape. In Paris, Jean-Jacques devoted himself mostly to portraiture, which brought him great success. He died in Paris on 23 July 1905.
